Is Cheap Website Design Worth It? An Honest Look

Is cheap website design actually worth it? An honest look - blog post by Jane Hinchliffe

Considering cheap website design, like Fiverr, or Upwork?

A few weeks ago, that’s what a client admitted to me partway through our discovery call: before she found me, she'd been seriously weighing up these options, just to get something live. She's not alone.

Cheap website design is genuinely tempting when you're watching every pound/dollar. But that price gap usually isn't good value, it's a different product entirely. In this post, we'll cover:

  • What you're really paying for with Fiverr and Upwork

  • Where it falls short for an established business

  • What to do instead if budget's the real barrier

  • What bespoke actually buys you

What You're Actually Paying For

Fiverr and Upwork sell you a task: build a website, handed over to someone you'll likely never speak to again. What's missing is the back-and-forth — the calls where you talk through why your current site isn't converting, who your dream client is, how your brand should feel before a single page gets built.

And there's something else, too: you're working with a fellow small business owner, not an anonymous gig account. Someone who's built her own thing from scratch, who understands exactly what's riding on this website because she's lived the same stakes herself.

You get a deliverable from a task-based platform. What you get from me is a thought-partner who's genuinely there for you and wants you to succeednot a faceless interaction, but someone who's still around after launch. That includes training on how to actually use your own website once it's live, and extra resources to lean on post-launch, rather than being handed a finished file and left to work it out alone.

Where Cheap Website Design Falls Short for an Established Business

  • No brand psychology. A gig worker filling in a template isn't building around how your ideal client makes decisions, whether that's an interior designer's high-end client or a coach's dream student.

  • Shaky SEO foundations. Cheap builds routinely skip the technical groundwork (proper site structure, page speed, mobile optimisation, AI search) that determines whether you're findable at all.

  • The hidden cost of redoing it. And I get it, because I've seen it plenty of times. A client comes to me a year later needing a full rebuild, having effectively paid twice.

Stanford's Web Credibility Research Project found that 75% of people judge a company's credibility purely on its website design, and a rushed, templated build is often the first thing a discerning visitor clocks, even if they couldn't say exactly why.

If Budget's the Real Barrier

I'll be honest: I wouldn't point anyone toward Fiverr or Upwork for a website, not even as a stopgap.

What I would say is this: cheap doesn't have to mean Fiverr. If budget's the genuine sticking point, there are still ways to get a proper, professional foundation without the £4,500+ bespoke price tag: the WiseWomen Template, ready to go for £295, or the 3-Day Website Build for £2,495 across two instalments. Neither cuts the corners a marketplace gig does, they're just a smaller scope.

What Bespoke Actually Buys You

As Warren Buffett put it, "price is what you pay, value is what you get."

Brands like deVOL Kitchens didn't build their premium reputation on a template, every visual choice reinforces the same story. That's what strategy-led design does: it makes your website feel like the quality of work you actually deliver, not a rough approximation of it.

The Takeaway 🌿

If your business has outgrown "good enough for now," your website probably has too. A Professional Website Audit + Strategy (£698, any platform) is a lower-commitment way to find out exactly where yours is holding you back, no pressure, just clarity.
