Art Gallery Website Design: Squarespace Shop for Posters
Squarespace e-commerce custom website build, plus extras | Timeline: 4 Weeks
Gloria Tordoff and Owen, aka Eric Broadbelt, owners of the Tordoff Gallery in Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire, sell rare, vintage and classic original movie posters from a historic ex-bank building and online. They hired me for art gallery website design from scratch: brand strategy, web copy, a Squarespace shop, poster and gallery photography, hero image design and poster mockups to show the posters at their best.
The starting point
The Tordoff Gallery was a brand new local business, so there was no website to rebrand or refresh. We started from scratch with the brand and the content. The owners sell high quality original movie posters, many of which are rare, and so it was important for the site to demonstrate trust and poster authenticity. Right away, I could feel Owen’s aka Eric’s passion for his posters, which often came with fascinating and entertaining personal stories for locating them.
Goals for the website
Sell original posters through an online shop that’s easy to browse.
Make it clear the gallery sells originals and no reprints.
Show each poster at its best with strong images.
Reflect the gallery’s personality: striking, playful, friendly.
Invite people to visit the gallery in Pateley Bridge, including one-to-one viewings for rare and vintage posters.
Let the owners add new posters themselves.

The brand behind the site
When I first visited the physical Gallery, I was blown away by the selection and quality of the posters they held.
They wanted the posters to speak for themselves and not compete, so classy black, white, grey with a pop of red for the buttons were ideal. The font choice needed to portray authority and credibility, so Adobe Caslon Pro for headings and Minion Pro for paragraphs were chosen. The owners loved the brand styling.
The favicon (the tiny icon in the browser tab) matches the existing logo. Next, hero banner design was key to grab the attention of the user. A clapperboard-type theme nicely linked up with filmmaking. Canva templates and additional training meant that their team member could add future SEO-friendly posters with a consistent look.
How we worked together
A first in-person meeting to understand the business and how they wanted to work.
Onboarding and brand strategy sessions.
Mentoring and marketing guidance on what the site should say overall, backed by keyword research.
I wrote the full web copy, took all the photography, designed the hero images and made a mockup for every poster, then built the whole site myself. I particularly enjoyed creating the mockups and seeing the posters come to life!
Asset handover.
Post-launch, added additional pages with full web copy, and additional photography.
Training for a team member to add future SEO-friendly posters.
What changed
Gloria and Owen aka Eric rated the site 10/10 via my feedback form. They told me that my photography and design skills enhanced the posters on the site. After launch they requested training for a team member, as well as intermittent work for additional pages with full web copy.
A testimonial from clients who appreciated ‘great direction and input’
“I had no hesitation in working with Jane from the moment we met, as I felt confident and comfortable with her approach to website development.
I would highly recommend Jane to anyone looking to have a website. She is easy to work with, has great ideas and the finished product is very professional.
10/10 all the way! A great website.
I appreciated the great direction and input from Jane using her extensive expertise. The use of quality images which Jane provided undoubtedly enhances the posters on our website.
The best thing about working with Jane is that she listens, is willing to adapt and delivers on what she promises.
I am sure as someone who is not the best with technology, that I will be using her services in the future as our business evolves.
We are happy for Jane to share our experience of working with her and for it to act as a reference for her to use to show potential clients how impressed we are with her services.”
