Making art heals you on so many levels...
We're not meant to keep our thoughts, dreams, fears, frustrations, anger and angst deep inside - no, we're all creative beings and honestly, releasing this stuff heals you time and time again.
And no, it doesn't have to be 'art', it can be dance, music, writing - just something that gets you out of your head and into your heart... The great news is, that the more you do this, the more you benefit and therefore those around you do too. The other great piece to this, is that the 'outcome' is NOT what it's about (unless selling your artwork) - no, it goes far, far deeper than that.
When I used to suffer from depression, I sometimes kept things bottled up - scared to let go, I think... Of course, this just made the depression worse and something has to give in the end. However, I found that when started to feel better and tentatively put brush/pen to paper once again, that if I was kind to myself, put aside the pesky inner critic and let go of perfection - that magic took place. It was like I was filtering through all the dross of life and working 'life' out on a subconscious level so that after creating, I felt calmer, lighter, more content and less frustrated.
Now I know for a fact that making art heals and if this post stirs your heart, I encourage you to reflect upon Picasso's quote above: 'Art washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life.' So friends, it's time to get out our journals and answer this: 'How might you make room for your inner light, truth and beauty?' How will you reveal your true-self?
